Goldman Sachs Group Inc (GS.N) is planning to cut thousands of employees to navigate a difficult economic environment, a source familiar with the matter said.

The layoffs are the latest sign that cuts are accelerating across Wall Street as dealmaking dries up. Investment banking revenues have plunged this year amid a slowdown in mergers and share offerings, marking a stark reversal from a blockbuster 2021 when bankers received big pay bumps.

The bank is weighing a sharp cut to the annual bonus pool this year, a separate source familiar with the matter said. That contrasts with increases of 40% to 50% for top-performing investment bankers in 2021, Reuters reported in January, citing people with direct knowledge of the matter. The company’s stock fell 1.3% in afternoon trading alongside shares of JPMorgan & Chase Co and Morgan Stanley , which fell 0.6% and 1.3%, respectively.

Last Group of French Troops Leave Central African RepublicFrance dispatched up to 1,600 troops to help stabilise the Central African Republic (CAR) after a coup in 2013 unleashed a civil war along sectarian lines. The operation, named Sangaris, was France's seventh military intervention in CAR since its independence in 1960. The last group of French troops left the country on Decemver 15, 2022 following a cooling in relations caused by closer ties between Bangui and Moscow. CAR enlisted the services of the Russian Wagner militia, which Paris accuses of abuses against civilians and "predation" of resources. CAR ranks among the poorest and most unstable countries in the world. Swathes of territory lie in the hands of rebel groups that trace their roots to the 2013 conflict. Relations between France and Mali plummeted after the military seized power in Bamako in August 2020 and eventually brought in the Russian  Wagner militia. They're not leaving...they're going to plan how to divide African's with intention of looting.
