Spot gold inched 0.2% higher to $1,496.49/oz, while US gold futures were little changed at $1,501.00/oz. Equity markets gained after US President Donald Trump said he would meet China’s top trade negotiator, while a White House official said the first day of talks had gone “probably better than expected.”

Over to Brexit, Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said on Thursday a deal could be clinched by end-October to allow the UK to leave the EU in an orderly fashion, after what he called a very positive meeting with Boris Johnson.
