Emergency workers are racing against time to free people from a collapsed building in the Western Cape.

According to unconfirmed reports, more than 20 construction workers were busy in the ill-fated George building when it collapsed into a pile of building rubble at 14:09 this afternoon.

George Municipal Disaster Services, GRDM, SAPS, and ambulance services are involved in the rescue efforts and going all out to help those trapped in the rubble. Emergency teams from Worcester and Cape Town are assisting and a crane has arrived on the scene from Mossel Bay.The building seems to have collapsed into its own underground parking area, leaving only a small rubble mound visible above ground level.The Western Cape Government says it is closely monitoring and sending resources to assist emergency response efforts.

Premier Alan Winde says: “All the necessary support has been offered to emergency personnel to expedite their response. At the moment, officials are focused on saving lives. This is our top priority at this stage.”Due to the collapse, the adjacent municipal main offices in York Street have been closed as a safety precaution.

George Municipality has asked for donations of water, Lucozade, wine gums, or any food for the rescue workers, These can be delivered via Ivy Street at 79 Victoria St, .
