Hadebe defines it as the responsibility inherited from parents due to their inability to participate in the economy during the apartheid era. They pass down this responsibility as it was passed on to them by their parents.“Some people do it willingly and some unwillingly. For some it’s explicit and for some implicit but it is happening nonetheless,” she clarifies.
“The Sandwich Generation is encountering this for the first time. For us , it’s been there. We are the first ones with the potential to break the cycle,” said Hadebe.The rising trend of the Sandwich Generation is a cause for concern, as it places significant pressure on individuals and families.She said it goes hand in hand with unemployment, which increased to 32.9% in the first quarter of this year, up from 32.1% in the previous period.
Not being transparent with one another’s financial standing invalidates people’s realities, she claimedBlack families are yet to reach the point of clearly defining their financial goals. This stands in the way of achieving these goals.
