Food prices squeeze the poor

A worker earning a national minimum wage of R3 643.92 a month is unable to feed their family at even the minimum level, as they can only provide an amount 38% below the food poverty line of R624 per person per month for each family member.

Stats SA recently adjusted the national poverty lines, something it does every five to 10 years or whenever there are notable changes observed in households’ consumption patterns or in the cost of living – which is the prices of goods and services.PMBEJD’s September 2021 Household Affordability Index and Report

The report added that, because there is only one income-earner in most black South African households, the R3 643.92 monthly minimum wage must support a reductive average of 4.3 people. This means that R384.28 remains per family member. “This is a terrifying prospect, as R384.28 is 38% below even the lowest poverty line, the food poverty line of R624 per capita per month.“This means that a worker earning at the maximum national minimum wage is unable to feed their family at even the minimum level to maintain wellbeing, health and child development, let alone productivity.”Electricity took an average of R731.50 of the wage. These were both non-negotiable expenses, taking up 54.7% of the minimum wage.
