The maize industry is not the only agricultural sector reeling from rain; tomato producers in December alone have lost almost R100 million.

The sector estimates that it will lose at least 2 million tonnes of maize due to damage caused by excessive rains. Across key maize-producing provinces such as the Free State and KwaZulu-Natal, about 75% of crops have been damaged.

South Africa has received copious amounts of rain this summer, causing damage to some essential crops, including maize, which the agriculture industry estimates will lose two million tons as a result, Christo van der Rheede, Agri SA's executive director, told Business Insider South Africa. Van der Rheede said about 75% of the maize planted across key maize-producing regions in KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State had been damaged.
