A fire that has damaged sections of parliament in Cape Town and now spread to the National Assembly chamber has sparked concerns over the opening of parliament and state of the nation address scheduled to be held on February 10.

Speaker of parliament Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula confirmed the chamber was on fire, citing concerns this will negatively affect preparations already under way for the official start of parliament.

Mapisa-Nqakula however said her office was determined to ensure the state of the nation address continued as planned. Public works and infrastructure minister Patricia de Lille, who has been at the parliament precinct since early Sunday morning, said firefighters were on standby to protect Tuynhuys, which serves at the president's office in Cape Town.

There's no money to pay essential staff to do duty over holidays to protect a national key point, yet they want to pay & are worrying about a parade and pomp rooted in colonial tradition? Oh wait, the whole parliamentary system is based on colonial tradition by the way!! 😂😂😂😂

At the beginning of the pandemic, cadres left the country's rail infrastructure unattended. Now our rail infrastructure is a mess. Now they left the national assembly on its own at night! Parliament is burning! What next? Strategic defence/petroleum/police/nuclear/water facility?

Somebody must go! Somebody must go now, before they are told to go. Before they are shovelled like the scum they are. No excuses from cadres should be taken or tolerated. Just go away!!

The ANC with a bit of help from their junior party the EFF, have finally decolonise parliament- it will be moved to under a tree on the laws of the Union buildings weather permitting.. if it rains parliament will be postponed until it stops !🤣 The ANC are so incompetent
