The Covid-19 coronavirus crisis is offering many businesses in South Africa an opportunity to rethink how they manage and motivate their teams for the better

According to the World Economic Forum, the fact that billions of people around the globe are in some form of lockdown means thatSouth Africa’s lockdown has been moved to level 4, with a small daily window opened for exercise, and some industries have been allowed to reopen under strict conditions. However, Employment and Labour Minister Thulas Nxesi has stressed that, in returning to work, it cannot be “business as usual”.

Psychologists and labour experts from around the world are advising employers that, more than ever, they need to show comprehensive support and encouragement to their people. Because of South Africa’s infrastructure challenges, they also need to manage the reality that, in some parts of the country, there is also limited internet connectivity and access to electricity for some of those trying to work remotely, causing additional stress.

Reassuring employees in terms of their job security is also a big part of this. Managers need to give them as much clarity as possible in terms of their financial futures. They also need to reassure employees that the company values them and their contributions, that they are part of the team, that they belong in the organisation and that they have a significant role to play there.

Some may say that what we are seeing is a new take on the well-known motivational theory of needs by renowned psychologist Abraham Maslow. However, should the situation change and lower-level needs are no longer being met, their attention will move to satisfy these before any others. That is why being flexible and adaptable can yield greater results when it comes to operational procedures and new routines. To embrace flexibility and adaptability, managers will need to learn to step back and trust more.
