Covid-19 infections are on the rise across parts of SA, and two new sub-lineages of Omicron, BA.4 and BA.5, appear to be driving the increase in cases. | zakiyahebrahim Health24com

Variants or Mutations or Types of Coronavirus or Covid-19 .

Two new sub-lineages of Omicron are responsible for an increasing number of Covid-19 cases in South Africa. Speaking during a briefing on Friday morning, KRISP infectious diseases expert Dr Richard Lessells said that the two sub-lineages - BA.4 and BA.5 - had a growth advantage over Omicron’s BA.2, which was until recently the dominant variant in the country. South Africa’s fourth wave was driven predominantly by Omicron BA.1, BA.2, and BA.3.

While BA.4 and BA.5 are similar to BA.2, they contain important differences and changes to the virus’s genetic code, called mutations. Subscribe to News24 for just R75 per month to read all our investigative and in-depth journalism. You can cancel any time.
