'I am a just 24-year-old girl that really wants to hug her mother,' writes Amy Pittaway, who has been teaching English in Wuhan, the epicentre of the coronavirus outbreak.

I moved to Wuhan, China, in May 2019 to teach English. We first became aware of the coronavirus in December of 2019 when our school recommended that we wear masks, but I had no idea of the risks.

It has only been in the last two weeks that the dangers of the virus have been broadcast and the statistics shared. We only really realized the seriousness of the epidemic when classes were cancelled at work on the 21st of January. The next day the airports cancelled all flights coming in and out of Wuhan, and all the busses, Metros and Taxi services in and around the city stopped running too.

The bridges connecting the district of Wuhan where I live to the rest of the city were closed and residents were instructed to stay indoors.
