FACTS: Why Gamondi has huge edge over Downs ahead of second leg

The reason why Miguel Gamondi has arrived in South Africa walking with a spring in his step has been established.

Mamelodi Sundowns play as hosts on Friday against Young Africans, with the scores still level at 0-0 after the first leg in Dar es Salaam last Saturday. The Brazilians ae favoured to prevail, but then, against Miguel Gamondi they have a man who only knows them but carries ‘extras’ in his back pocket.

Gamondi and Tovey delivered the 2005/06 league title but were then shown the door in the early stages of the next season, with Gordon Igesund then taking over. Interesting is that throughout the 18 months that the Argentine spent at Stars, he won on all his three visits to Tshwane to play Sundowns.

The next trip to the capital city was a year later and he won 2-0 with Luis Renteria’s brace making the difference against a Sundowns team that was now coached by the late Henri Michel.
