Transnet and the Special Investigating Unit have won a court order blocking pension payouts to two former employees accused of inflating the price of breathalyser straws by a staggering 10 000%.
Instead of paying 29 cents each for the straws, Lerato Mary Theresa Makenete and Landela Hawkins Madubane are alleged to have colluded with three suppliers to pay R29.29 for each straw. The straws, which look like drinking straws, are used with breathalysers and alcohol testing devices. They are available online for around R350 per a pack of 1 000, or 35 cents per straw.
