Police accused of firing live rounds at protesters during protest against election results, handling of the coronavirus pandemic, economic hardship and human rights violations

People protest outside the Belarusian embassy in Kyiv, Ukraine, August 11 2020. Picture: REUTERS/VALENTYN ORINENKO European Union foreign ministers will hold a special meeting on Friday to discuss the unstable situation in Belarus, with some floating the possibility of renewed sanctions from the bloc.

Security forces have clashed with protesters for three consecutive nights after strongman President Alexander Lukashenko claimed a landslide re-election victory in a vote on Sunday that his opponents say was rigged. A former Soviet collective farm manager, Lukashenko has ruled Belarus for more than a quarter of a century but faces anger over his handling of the coronavirus pandemic, a sluggish economy and human rights.

Lukashenko has accused the protesters of being in cahoots with foreign backers from Russia and elsewhere.
