Editorial | R166bn: Stop the waste

In a country with soaring unemployment, stagnant economic growth and a diminishing tax base, the rise in fruitless and wasteful expenditure is a devastating blow to confidence in the ANC’s ability to patch the leaks in the state’s purse.

When your editor does not know the difference between irregular and wasteful expenditure. The R166 bn was not wasted neither stolen. Simply the correct procedure was not followed but the state, still got what it wanted. It pays to know the difference to correctly inform readers.

Hold on! Irregular expenditure is not 'waste' and it does not necessarily involve corruption either. It's money, which has been spent without following the applicable rules and regulations with the state still receiving what was procured. It's different to wasteful expenditure.

Can we rephrase this Mr Editor: PresidencyZA of CyrilRamaphosa and MYANC presides of R166bn wasteful expenditure during covid19 pandemic (how does it sound)
