Editorial | Covid-19 is still here. Act responsibly

Over this holiday period, we must have a joyous and safe time by limiting our movements, particularly when it comes to socialising and meeting with friends, to slow the spread of the new Covid-19 variant, Omicron, which, although it seems to be less deadly, is more transmissible.

Keeping the lockdown at adjusted level 1 does not mean that the pandemic is over and we can let out guard down, particularly in light of the number of Covid-19 infections reported in the past few days having skyrocketed. We and the country cannot afford to go into another hard lockdown, as this would have a devastating effect on the already battered economy and add to the already disastrous level of joblessness.

But it will depend on how we behave over the next two weeks and, if we continue to be reckless and irresponsible, we will leave the authorities with no choice but to tighten restrictions. And that’s not what we want to ring in the new year with.Let’s enjoy responsibly and adhere to all the preventive measures, which include social distancing, always wearing face masks, washing our hands and – most importantly – avoiding superspreader events.

Only our responsible behaviour and stronger compliance with Covid-19 prevention and treatment protocols during the festive season will see us through and save lives and livelihoods in the new year.No one is safe until everyone is safe.
