Duane torpedoing SA's URC playoff hopes

Duane Vermeulen is helping his Ulster teammates “get over” their Champions Cup disappointment to beat Munster and push the South African teams out of Vodacom United Rugby Championship playoff contention.

A Stormers win over Glasgow in Cape Town on Friday will propel them into second, at least for the few hours before the conclusion of the Belfast game. Should Ulster win, they will go back to second but, if they lose, then the bonus-point spread for the two games might end up determining which of Munster or the Stormers are second.

Over the two legs, meaning 160 minutes of rugby, there was just one point separating the two teams , and it has prompted inevitable concerns about a possible hangover at Ulster ahead of the derby.

URC leaders send ‘B’ side to SALeinster have seemingly written off the challenge of the in-form Sharks and Stormers and left the bulk of their Ireland internationals at home for their two-match tour of South Africa. In fairness to them, their b squad is more that a match for slot of A, squad s. Leinster’s second team is no where near as good as it used to be.
