Both Marcus Garvey and George Padmore toured America and the Caribbean, delivering speeches and engaging in general activism, promoting the ideology, culminating with the latter convening the Fifth Pan-African Congress in Manchester, UK, in October of 1945anniversary of the founding of the Organisation of African Unity , later to become the African Union . In keeping with tradition, almost all countries on the continent will commemorate the event in one form or another.

One cannot speak of Africa Day without making reference to the impact of the liberatory philosophy that gave birth to the organisation. The OAU was inspired by the spirit of Pan-Africanism, which had been infused into the young intellectual leadership emerging on the continent by the close of World War II. The founding of the organisation was due to “a developmental push factor” emanating from a focused attention on the continent by Africans in the diaspora.

A re-examination of Pan-Africanist ideology is crucial. What's with groupings in our midst calling for the removal of the continental borders, saying “this is in pursuance of Pan-Africanism”?South Africans need to be in the know if we want to create a prosperous future.
