The European Union on Monday announced a stricter visa application process for Ethiopian nationals in the face of Addis Ababa’s ‘insufficient’ cooperation in returning its citizens illegally staying in the EU.. Issue multiple entry visasUnder the restriction, the time it takes to process visas for Ethiopian nationals will triple from 15 to 45 days, the EU said.

“One would have expected the EU to impose economic sanctions or at least specifically target those in positions of power. Then the government would act. Unfortunately, again, they missed the point. You don’t punish poor, ordinary citizens and expect the government to meet your demands. This doesn’t make sense.”The EU has invested millions of Euros in projects such as awareness-raising campaigns in Ethiopia to curb irregular migration through the Horn of Africa country.

Since then, according to the EU, two Joint Working Group meetings to monitor the implementation of the arrangement took place on 13 May 2019 and 28 November 2019.Despite the existing readmission arrangement and efforts to intensify engagement on readmission and provide technical assistance by the EU, cooperation on readmission with Ethiopia has not improved, the EU added in the statement.

It indicated that these messages, delivered at technical meetings, during bilateral meetings with member states, to the Ethiopian Ambassador to the EU in April 2023, and while engaging with Ethiopia’s authorities, have not produced the expected results and have not led to an improvement in cooperation.
