The embattled UK retailer may close 22 stories in 2020, putting jobs at risk, as it discusses company voluntary arrangements

Bengaluru — Ailing British retailer Debenhams says two proposed company voluntary arrangements could see all its stores remaining open during 2019, with 22 closures planned for next year, putting about 1,200 jobs at risk.

On Friday, the company detailed two proposed CVAs — one relating to Debenhams Retail, the main trading entity and another for Debenhams Properties. “For the business to prosper, we need to restructure the group’s store portfolio and its balance sheet, which are not appropriate for today’s much-changed retail environment,” Debenhams executive chair Terry Duddy said. “Our priority is to save as many stores and as many jobs as we can, while making the business fit for the future.”

Inflation is possibly the most serious economic risk, not just in SANewsletter| It is critical to maintain the independence of the Reserve Bank while intensifying efforts to preserve the value of the rand. This is the only way South Africans can build wealth and get themselves out of poverty, writes Mpiyakhe Dhlamini As sec 224 (1), SARB's primary Constitutional object is 'to protect the value of the currency.' It CAN then print money for essential infrastructure, at low interest rates. Like repaying Eskom's R420bn loans. And building social housing to lease. NO cash goes to individuals.
