Build One South Africa leader Mmusi Maimane has explained why he left the Democratic Alliance in a tell-all book calledleft the DA in 2019 following the party’s poor performance at the national elections. In his book, Maimane said the party failed to incorporate all South Africans.that some of the party’s members were committed to building a minority party. Asked why he decided to release the book on election month, Mmusi Maimane said he wanted to explain why he left DA.
Mmusi Maimane served as leader of the DA from 2015 to 2019, succeeding former party leader Helen Zille. The Soweto-born leader explained how the party was divided on racial grounds. “I remember sitting in one federal council where we had to debate at length the issue of redistribution and justice. And at times it always felt like a choice of one racial group to another. All of these issues are the complexity of this country in trying to lead a movement of all South Africans.”
