Critical healthcare specialist shortages in SA could worsen with NHI, medical bodies warn

Medical organisations representing South Africa's limited healthcare resources have warned that the already critical shortages may be further exacerbated by the National Health Insurance policy, potentially prompting a wave of emigration.

Organisations representing some of the most scarce shortages in the medical sector are concerned that countries, like Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland and New Zealand, are actively poaching specialists, such as anesthetists. One organisation, representing the majority of limited ophthalmologists in the country, said they would be actively fighting against the act in court.
