The leader of the party with the most seats in parliament automatically becomes the president, so this is also in effect a presidential election. The ruling People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola and its candidate, incumbent João Lourenço, are up against the United Patriotic Front coalition, a grouping that is led by a renewed National Union for the Total Independence of Angola , led by popular presidential candidate, Adalberto Costa Junior.
This will be the fourth election since the end of the Angolan civil war in 2002. The three previous post-war polls were marked by in the number of people voting for the ruling party. In the last election, five years ago, the party's share of the vote was down to 61% nationally, in contrast to 70% in the previous election.With the political playing field stacked in the ruling party's favour, conflict could erupt after the 24 August polls.
