With about 500 burials a week, city officials are calling on people to consider alternative burial options.

CAPE TOWN - The high number of deaths from COVID-19 means some provinces are fast running out of burial space.COVID-19 means graveyards have become common meeting places.READ:The City of Cape Town is recording about 2000 burials a month.

Because funerals are considered super-spreader events, an appeal has been made for people to hold funerals during the week rather than weekends. But it's also looking at other options. "For some time now we have been engaging with not only the undertaker community but also the religious leaders to help engage with our residents cutaway we have also requested them to consider alternative forms of burial. In some cultures and religions cremations are allowed so we have really ramped up our efforts to be able to accommodate increased numbers on those sides," said Zahid Badroodien, from City of Cape Town.eNCA's Ayesha Ismail has more in the video above.
