Athletics SA is already entertaining thoughts of halving the season after the extension of the national lockdown due to the Covid-19 coronavirus outbreak forced another postponement of scheduled events

ASA was supposed to have had two of its three grand prix events by the end of this week, but, in keeping with the musical chairs that have replaced the global athletics schedule, the extension of the national lockdown to the end of the month has necessitated another indefinite delay of a season that had barely begun when the pandemic hit.

“We don’t know what kind of season we’re going to have. Assuming the lockdown is extended after April 30, our season is going to be a half season. “We have people who are experts in terms of coming up with the criteria and the ranking of the events in that order, from provincial and national to international level.

Another event that has been postponed is the Comrades Marathon, whose administrators had caused the sports department much irritation by initially insisting the June 14 event would go ahead as scheduled in the immediate aftermath of the national lockdown.
