Police spokesperson Capt FC Van Wyk said the woman, aged 41, was arrested on Thursday and will appear in the Strand magistrate's court once charged. Capitec is offering its traumatised Cape Town staff counselling after the incident.
In a statement, the bank said the woman had a savings account with the bank but not a line of credit. This after the speculation on social media about why the woman did what she did.

It's so sad that it had to go that far. l'd like to believe that if she understood what she was going to pay for her 'apparent loan' and how long and also understanding the bank charges etc,she couldn't have been arrested. Also the bank manager could 've tried explaining to her.
It was unfair of Capitec to avoid helping customers. She is not the first custumer with such an issue. Nedbank, Absa and Standard bank had been here for so long but helping customers is their first priority.
