KwaZulu-Natal Health MEC Nomagugu Simelane-Zulu has expressed concern over the rising number of coronavirus cases in the province, and urged residents to follow the health protocols.
The eThekwini metro and uMgungundlovu district were ranked as the top two hotspots, with 16 682 and 5 292 positive cases respectively.“Yes, eThekwini metro does have the largest population in the province, however if we all follow the regulations, we wouldn’t have such [a] high number”, she added.Simelane-Zulu said the National Institute for Communicable Diseases had helped them determine a hotspot by using the criteria of five infections per 100 people.
Explaining the change in behaviours that people need to adjust to, the MEC highlighted the importance of avoiding unnecessary social gatherings.“There are some traditions we might have to adjust such as weddings”.
