Yesterday, Traffic Services attempted to clamp down on public transport contraventions in the Masiphumele area, specifically that of bus transportation, with Mayco member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, warning commuters to steer clear of unroadworthy vehicles even if they offer more affordable alternative transport.

“Three foreign registered buses were found to be in contravention but a crowd of agitators gathered and prevented the officers from enforcing the law, eventually pelting staff with stones.”Law Enforcement and Metro Police responded along with the SAPS POP unit. Unable to restore calm despite several warnings, the unrest continued until stun grenades and rubber bullets were used to dispel the group.

Two persons were arrested for public violence, while all three of the buses were towed and impounded. A total of 17 people lost their lives in a bus crash in Limpopo in January, another 15 in a bus collision in June, in Tshwane.“While our Traffic Services work in line with the National Road Safety Strategy, it is imperative that we improve road safety for all,” added Smith. “We must implore those who are making use of long distance public transport this time of the year- please travel safely and carefully consider the risks that often come along with discounted travel solutions.
