Two days after the explosion which sunk a huge part of Bree Street in the Johannesburg CBD, City of Joburg civil engineer and consultant, Johan La Grange, has confirmed a pure gas was the cause

.Meanwhile, city manager, Floyd Brink, indicated that although the Johannesburg Emergency Services had completed its assessment between Lilian Ngoyi and Loveday Streets, it has been discovered that the tunnel's structural integrity was deformed and not stable. Brink said it may collapse at any given time as a result of the movement of cars crossing towards CJ Cronje Building."The rest of the buildings and the foundations are safe.

"EMS has deployed the Positive Pressure Ventilation Fans to blow out of the underground system any gas remnants that may have remained and the extraction of the gas into the atmosphere is underway. Again, these are intrinsically safe methods being deployed to ensure the safety of residents," Brink said.

"Let me hasten to dismiss any impression that may be created that the city is lacking in capacity or engineering skills to understand and respond to the situation we are confronted with. It is the city’s own engineers and emergency services have directed the work being undertaken to respond to this disaster," said Brink.
