Durban - Helping frontline workers in the battle against Covid-19. That was the Tawakul “Women of Art for Aid” Initiative which raised funds through their first virtual charity art auction that went to the Islamic Medical Association of South Africa for their Covid-19 relief fund.

Desai specialises in 3D cement artworks, although she also works in other mediums. Growing up in Durban, she never had any formal art training. “I use a template and then build up with cemented sand. I only use acrylic paint. I enjoy the natural beauty, as well as the layering and texture to create the 3D effect,” said Desai, adding she also enjoyed Arabic calligraphy and abstract art.

Another former Durbanite, Faried Salie, who also donated art to the auction, said she was pleased that her three art pieces were sold.
