Champions League: Chiefs bank on impressive CAF home record ahead of Wydad semifinal clash

That is if Amakhosi, who early this month squeezed into the DStv Premiership top eight, will make their advantage count heading into their CAF Champions League semifinal against Wydad Athletic of Morocco on Saturday.

Chiefs host the north African giants in the return leg of the premier continental club competition at the FNB Stadium. They lead through a Samir Nurkovic solitary goal from their meeting in Casablanca last weekend.Much as the Amakhosi have been struggling in the just-concluded domestic campaign, they have put up a remarkable show in the Champions League.

Chiefs head into the Saturday game having not lost in six home games – they won three and drew three – since they started the campaign in Cameroon against PWD Bamenda in the preliminary rounds in November. Even better, Chiefs beat Wydad 1-0 in the group stage of the competition early this year. The result at the FNB Stadium kept alive their dream of qualifying for the knockout stage but a 4-3 aggregate win over Simba SC of Tanzania in the quarterfinals marked the remarkable turnaround for the Naturena-based outfit.

It got better with interim coaches Arthur Zwane and Dillon Sheppard in charge after head coach Gavin Hunt was sacked in May.Incoming coach Stuart Baxter, meanwhile, will be watching from the stands again as the Brit awaits his work permit, the club confirmed this week.As things stand, the decider could pit the Amakhosi against their one-time local rival Pitso Mosimane, who also has one foot in the final.

It is so ironic. 😱

Did you say ranked number eight in the domestic league?
