Tough times lay in wait for ANC members who were outspoken about opposing a GNU with the DA. According to reports from, heads are set to roll amongst the ANC’s National Executive Committee , following remarks made against the Government of National Unity with the Democratic Alliance .The official line from the ANC is that the decision to for a GNU with the DA was a unanimous one. Nevertheless, those who were vehemently opposed to a GNU with the DA now find themselves in murky waters. Cautioned against speaking out and now clearly on the wrong side of the fence can only spell difficulty for their political careers. As a result, President Cyril Ramaphosa invited all GNU parties to set aside their differences and put the best interests of South Africa first. This call followed a lengthy meeting of the ANC NEC in Boksburg last week.

According to the IOL report, ANC NEC members were read the riot act about airing their personal views on a GNU with the DA. As a result, they will face consequences. However, the telling-off was not well received by many. Unnamed sources said, “We can’t support a GNU with the DA, imagine! These people do not want us and now have to be in bed with us!”

Former Minister of Tourism Lindiwe Sisulu was one of the vocal ANC members who came out guns blazing against a GNU with the DA. “Such a partnership would be spitting on the graves of dead heroes of the struggle,” she was quoted as saying. Subsequently, ANC spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri downplayed the remarks.
