South Africa’s golden girl and world champion Caster Semenya did not disappoint fans after she competed in her first track meeting since June last year.
Semenya claimed victory in the 300m heat in Auckland Park, Johannesburg, on Friday with a national record time of 36.78 seconds. The world class runner took part in the Newton Classic Shootout – a meet which featured South Africa’s top athletes racing alongside high school students – in an effort to encourage students to take up athletics for enjoyment.
Fans, young and old alike, huddled around Semenya, who happily signed autographs and took pictures at every turn. The world athletics body IAAF last year introduced new track and field rules that prevent Semenya from taking part in events between 400m and 1500m without taking testosterone-reducing drugs."It was an amazing race, an amazing time.
