It all started with an ANC caucus meeting earlier on Tuesday where the party’s members of the provincial legislature were given clear instructions only to vote for Maape.
One of those said to be returning from the National Assembly to become an MEC is China Dodovu who previously served as an MEC. Dodovu was in the legislature and joined his party colleagues in pro-Maape songs during the election on Tuesday.Asked about the reshuffle, Maape said that was not a subject of discussion as yet. He would not say if it would happen or not.
With 21 seats, the ANC is the majority in the legislature and that is the number of votes Maape received against five for the DA’s candidate, Winston Rabotapi. The EFF, with six seats, did not vote. “For the opposition to say there are issues in the ANC that they know are going to happen, there is nothing of that sort. The ANC is a big organisation and there are different views. From time to time, space is allowed to engage and discuss … and once a conclusion is reached we all unite [behind] that particular conclusion. And that is evident today that there were proper engagements up to the point when the expression was made on the floor of the legislature,” Bapela said.
Maape takes over a troubled provincial government with half of its departments under administration and many municipalities on the verge of collapse.
I fail to understand why EFF even claim to participate in democratic processes. Most of the time they just boycott everything! Like teenagers throwing a hissy fit!
