Passenger killed as soldiers riddle vehicle with more than 80 bullets, apparently thinking it belonged to criminals

Graffiti referring to the 2014 World Cup is seen in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Picture: REUTERS— Brazilian troops killed a passenger when they fired on a car taking a family to a baby shower in Rio de Janeiro.Globo TV reported on Monday that police said at least two others were wounded, including a passerby. The troops apparently thought the white car belonged to criminals.

No weapons were found in the car, which belonged to a"family who ended up being victims of the military”, said Salgado. “I don’t see a legitimate defence for the number of shots.” Army patrols had already been used in the impoverished favelas but the military intervention saw generals replace civilian authorities in top security jobs, as well as an increase in the use of soldiers to back up police.

But new state governor Wilson Witzel has promised to take a hard line against drug traffickers, and told reporters recently that snipers had been deployed in the city.
