Pollard and Am have both left the Springbok squad and returned to their respective clubs after suffering injuries in the loss to the Wallabies in Adelaide. In their absence, Damian Willemse will shift from fullback to flyhalf for the rematch with Australia in Adelaide, while Kriel will take Am’s place at outside centre.
“Those are two of our leaders, two great players with experience who are great at what they do,” tighthead prop Nyakane said, when asked on Wednesday about Pollard and Am. “In the Springbok squad, we thrive on helping each other and making everyone better. The people who are going to be taking those roles are just as good players and leaders.
“It is sad to have lost Handre and Lukhanyo, but Jesse and the guys come with just as much experience. It is a blow, but we have capable guys who are coming in and we trust them. We know that they are capable of doing the same job.”While Pollard has blown hot and cold for the Springboks this year, Am has been consistently excellent throughout the home series against Wales and the opening Rugby Championship fixtures, even when the Springboks have not come out as winners.
Kriel was straightforward when asked whether Am’s outstanding form over the past couple of years will put extra pressure on him in Sydney.“Not at all,” Kriel said. “Lukhanyo has set a great standard. He has been playing amazing rugby. I know what role and responsibilities I have to do in my position to contribute to the team.
