Photo: Katlholo MaifadiJust a few days after the appointment of the new director-general of the department of international relations and cooperation, Zane Dangor, the OR Tambo Building in Pretoria, which houses the department, ignited its activities on a high note by hosting the 2022 Heads of Mission Conference last month.
Similarly, the chief representatives use this session to reflect on and share their thoughts with the president and the executive about successes, prospects and the challenges they face in the execution of the country’s foreign policy. As South Africa’s chief representatives, the heads of mission carry with them the hopes and aspirations of millions of men and women in our country.
Needless to say, the advent of Covid-19, which heightened dependence on the fourth industrial revolution, has changed the traditional architecture of this profession. Such fundamentals include, but are not limited to, research and analysis of global developments and how these may affect the home country, advice on the home governments’ response to prevailing global situations, engagement with foreign diplomats and the host country, public diplomacy events, and trade and investment seminars and road shows.
According to the World Bank’s SA Economic Update: “The reasons for low growth and high unemployment do not lie in government’s crisis response. At the centre of their post-Heads of Mission Conference is the implementation of strong, achievable and targeted mission annual plans as their own contribution towards reviving the economy in line with the economic reconstruction and recovery plan.
This approach will assist government in determining the strengths and weaknesses of missions and leverage on their capabilities. Firstly, to promote and position South Africa as a preferred destination for tourism, trade and investment in host countries by working together with key strategic partners in such sectors.
It is therefore important to create platforms and conducive environments through which people can interact at various levels. These will cultivate tolerance, and promote cultural understanding and appreciation. Traditionally, national days have always been used as powerful public diplomacy tools through which host countries can be exposed to South Africa’s culture, trade and investment.
