British bike makers are battling to get clarity on post-Brexit tariffs from the EU, or being engulfed by cheap Chinese imports

London — British bike manufacturers are warning that they face competition from a wave of cheap Chinese imports after Brexit as the UK abandons EU anti-dumping rules.

“We’ve got the coronavirus, we’ve got Brexit — we need, as a nation, to support industries that have potential to grow,” said William Butler-Adams, MD of Brompton, the maker of the eponymous folding bike favoured by London commuters. “There’s this fantastic opportunity in cycling. You would have thought the government would support it and nurture the industry.”

“We have been consulting with British bicycle producers and recognise the challenges the industry faces,” the department for international trade said in a statement. “However, British consumers will bear the brunt of higher prices if anti-dumping measures were retained or carried across from the EU.”The UK is assessing each of the EU’s anti-dumping rules on a case-by-case basis.

She said her company’s recent efforts to contact the Trade Remedies Authority, the government agency responsible, have gone without reply, meaning she doesn’t know the basis for the decision or how it could be appealed.“It’s a substantial threat to us,” said Lawson, whose firm generates about £10m in sales annually. “It’s not good for the cycling consumer at all.”
