Since the start of the long weekend, police have arrested 41 congregants in two separate religious gatherings.

Police Minister Bheki Cele has apologised to the Muslim community after a South African Police Service member insulted the Islamic Prophet Muhammad on Friday in Mpumalanga.

The group was arrested for contravening the Covid-19 Disaster Management Lockdown Regulations in relation to the prohibition of gatherings.“The comment made about Prophet Mohammed, which can be heard at the end of the video, is rather unfortunate and it is unacceptable that someone could make such an utterance. Therefore, the SAPS management has directed that this matter too be investigated and the person/s who made the comment about the Prophet be identified and brought to book.

Cele further reiterated government’s call to religious leaders to ensure a collective effort to contain the spread of the coronavirus. “It is within this context that Minister Cele is reminding all citizens of the country to always be conscious of the primary purpose of the Covid-19 Disaster Management Lockdown Regulations, which is to protect South Africans from the corona virus.

'You think your president is crazy?': Muslims arrested for praying under lockdownMinister Bheki Cele warned on Sunday that police had 'no choice but to enforce the law' if the lockdown regulations were flouted for religious gatherings. U guys are stupid, why can’t u say they where arrested for breaking the lockdown law I think that was a trick question. I wish if journalists and newspapers were promoters of the stay at home and awareness about the pandemic message . I understand u want to make money with more negativity than good deeds

Lockdown: Religious leaders urged to discourage gatherings after Muslim worshippers arrestedUPDATE: SAPS National spokesman Vish Naidoo has confirmed that the arrest of Muslim worshippers in a video that has gone viral on social media occurred in Masibekela in the Mbuzini policing jurisdiction of Mpumalanga. Definitely, what the police officers had done wasn't pleasant, an apology from bhekicele_com, would definitely be accepted Police did good job but SA, our police need to cut tone a bit. Arrests can still happen without SAPS acting like committed straat maids even when there’s no resistance. We need dignified police force, not people who act like thugs like they did in the past or in Marikana Abramjee Yes I am glad that they are arrested by not listening to the president but some ppl are soo against Islam that they don't respect the religion

SAPS orders probe into officer who made demeaning remarks about MuhammadThe suspects were in a building in Pretoria West on Friday where they had been found praying, allegedly in breach of lockdown regulations. The men were released on bail on Saturday. First deal with those lawbreakers who are endangering our lives by gathering to pray and disrespecting our president. Sorry but every religion is important. If Christians cannot go to Church on Easter Weekend, them muslims can also make an effort to avoid mosques during lockdown. The law is the same for each and everyone. Hands off our SAPoliceService , pray at home with your Mohammad.

Malema defends cops asking Muslims defying lockdown: ‘Muhammad is bigger than the president?’A group of Muslims were arrested ahead of Ramadan, though some have criticised the SAPS for being overly 'dramatic' about it, while others have called their attitude 'insulting'. This is not the way to treat unarmed citizens There were children there and guns were being pointed I see what you trying to do and it's not gona end well. TeranceKgokolo I think mentioning Mohammed was unnecessary. They could have arrested them without asking them stupid questions and saying stuff like that
