BELA Bill will give schools power to immediately suspend pupils accused of serious misconduct

Among other things, the new law will make Grade R the new compulsory school-starting grade and it will also increase the term of imprisonment for parents convicted of willfully not sending their children to school from six months to 12 months.

Schools will have the power to immediately suspend pupils accused of serious misconduct without giving them the option of motivating why they should not be suspended once the Basic Education Laws Amendment Bill becomes law. This is according to a recent amendment that has been included in the bill which has been in the development stage for more than eight years.

The bill, which was widely expected to be passed by the National Council of Provinces on Thursday, was deferred to 16 May"to allow for the amended committee report to be published in the document for parliamentary announcements".South Africans need to be in the know if we want to create a prosperous future.
