Early results of midterm elections indicate Democrats are doing better than expected, though Republicans are on course to wrest back control of the House of Representatives

US President Joe Biden speaks during a Democratic National Committee event in Bowie, Maryland, US, on November 7 2022. Picture: BLOOMBERG/TING SHENControl of Congress was up for grabs early on Wednesday after the US midterm elections, with many of the most competitive races uncalled, leaving it unclear whether Republicans would crack Democrats’ tenuous hold on power.

That number could change; based on a Reuters analysis of the leading non-partisan forecasters, only 13 of the 53 most competitive races had been decided, raising the prospect that the final outcome may not be known for some time. Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic speaker of the House, said in a statement: “It is clear that House Democratic members and candidates are strongly outperforming expectations around the country.”

Thirty-five Senate seats, all 435 House seats and three dozen governors’ races are on the ballot. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, a leading contender for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024, added to his growing national profile with a dominant victory over Democratic Representative Charlie Crist, Edison projected.

The problems stoked claims, without any evidence, among former President Donald Trump and his supporters that the failures were deliberate. The primary issue weighing on Democrats was stubbornly high annual inflation, which at 8.2% stands at the highest rate in 40 years.
