Social media posts from accounts linked to Guinea-Bissau’s President Umaro Sissoco Embalo said later on Tuesday the situation in the West African country was under government control and calm had returned to the capital Bissau. The AU issued a similar statement, adding that some government members were being detained and calling on the military to release them. It gave no details.
An unverified video shared on social media showed three heavily armed men in civilian clothing emerging from a vehicle in the Government Palace car park, gunshots echoing in the background. The cabinet meeting was being held to prepare for a forthcoming Ecowas summit in response to last week’s military takeover in Burkina Faso, the latest in a rash of coups across the region in the past 18 months.
