Methuselah wasn’t always the oldest tree. Once there was another Bristlecone Pine nicknamed Prometheus that was accidentally cut down by a researcher whose core sampler got stuck in the trunk. To his absolute horror, the core samples showed the tree to be over 5 000 years old, but by then it was pretty much firewood.
Bristlecone Pines are notoriously slow growers and average about 0.02cm a year. They are fortunately not the only geriatrics around, and a clonal forest of Quaking Aspen in Utah, known as Pando, has been shown to be as old as 14,000 years. The enormous forest is a collection of genetically identical stems which sprang from one single seed.
