Free State housing authorities and the Special Investigating Unit have launched far-reaching litigation to cancel the so-called"asbestos scam" contract – and to recover the R225 million spent on it. Weeks before Chief Justice Raymond Zondo recommended that government seek a legal opinion on how to recover over R200 million in taxpayers’ money allegedly looted during the failed Free State asbestos roof eradication project, the SIU and the Free State Member of the Executive Council on Human Settlements took the companies at the centre of the scandal to court.
