Free State housing authorities and the Special Investigating Unit have launched far-reaching litigation to cancel the so-called “asbestos scam” contract – and to recover the R225 million spent on it. | karynmaughan

Director of Blackhead Edwin Sodi testifies at Commission of Inquiry Into State Capture on August 19, 2020 in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Free State housing authorities and the Special Investigating Unit have launched far-reaching litigation to cancel the so-called"asbestos scam" contract – and to recover the R225 million spent on it. Weeks before Chief Justice Raymond Zondo recommended that government seek a legal opinion on how to recover over R200 million in taxpayers’ money allegedly looted during the failed Free State asbestos roof eradication project, the SIU and the Free State Member of the Executive Council on Human Settlements took the companies at the centre of the scandal to court.

The SIU and Free State government want the Free State High Court in Bloemfontein to order that the Service Level Agreement that was entered into by the Free State Department of Human Settlements and businessman Edwin Sodi’s Blackhead Consulting/Diamond Hill joint venture to be reviewed and set aside.Subscribe to News24 for just R75 per month to read all our investigative and in-depth journalism.
