Getty ImagesYou probably know that the glass ceiling refers to, among other things, the persistent, invisible barriers that prevent women from rising to the highest management levels within organisations and filling top leadership positions that have traditionally been filled by white men.
In South Africa, the glass ceiling is prevalent across multiple industry sectors as seen in the chart below: Percentage of Women versus Men in Senior and Top Management positions, per sector in South Africa .SuppliedResearch has found that gender stereotypes and social roles significantly contribute to keeping the glass ceiling firmly in place.
Men are expected to fill the employment and provider role while women are expected to fill the domestic, family and homemaker role. As agentic “male” traits and behaviours are the default expectation of how managers should be, and as they form part of the criteria used to hire or promote candidates into senior and top management positions, women seem to be automatically excluded from consideration.
Instead of being seen to be assertive, competent and suitable for promotions , women are judged as being aggressive and abrasive and not suitable for promotion. Gender stereotype awareness training programmes and “speak up” policies and platforms should be implemented to enable women and men at all levels of the organisation to interrupt and call out gender stereotypic behaviours and actions when they occur.
