The ANC head of elections Fikile Mbalula admitted that voters punished the party for being unconvincing in its promise to deal with corruption, unemployment and internal squabbles.

ANC head of elections Fikile Mbalula and ANC deputy secretary-general Jessie Duarte at the Electoral Commission results centre on November 3 2021.The ANC head of elections Fikile Mbalula admitted that voters punished the party for being unconvincing in its promise to deal with corruption, unemployment and internal squabbles, among other things.

He said the party ran on a ticket of renewal at the 2017 ANC Nasrec elective conference — where dealing with corruption was at the apex — which was necessary for the ANC’s survival, but the party has not been able to convince South Africans that it is indeed dealing with it. But, he said, there was also general unhappiness with Eskom when it comes to areas such as Soweto where residents did not want prepaid metres and had called for unreasonable flat rates of R200 per month when they were actually using more electricity.

“What is that renewal programme? A changed organisation that is going back to its values. An organisation that does not only exist for families, for individuals. An organisation that is firm about corruption, an organisation that is serious about governance.” This would likely lead to a contest when the party goes to its national elective conference next December.

Punishment? Fikile Mbalula responds to ANC defeat in Gauteng metros'If there's any punishment is by our voters who did not come out in numbers to vote,' Mbalula said. There is no such thing called 'our voters.' You only count 'voters who went out and actually voted for you.' Those who did not vote, did not vote and no one can claim them as his/her voters. In fact: If you are not voting, what could have been a vote does not count as such. Yadda Yadda.. How m i your voter if I didn’t come n vote for you?
