ANC readies for new role in Joburg opposition benches | Citypress

On Monday, at the inaugural Johannesburg council meeting, the DA was elected to take total control of the City of Johannesburg when it clinched the mayor, speaker and chief whip positions.

The ANC fielded Mpho Moerane as its mayoral candidate and Eunice Mgcina for both speaker and chief whip positions, but both lost to DA candidates. Instead, the DA’s Vasco da Gama got 147 votes and Mgcina 118 votes, to secure da Gama as the new speaker of the council. Da Gama held the same position after the 2016 local government elections.

Moerane, who had been executive mayor since October following the death of Jolidee Matongo in September, lost out to DA mayoral candidate Mpho Phalatse. Phalatse won 144 votes while Moerane received 121 votes. Tyrell Meyers was also appointed chief whip of the council.In a statement on Tuesday morning, ANC greater Joburg regional secretary Dada Morero said the party welcomed the outcomes of the election that put the ANC as the official opposition in the council.

"Moreover, this also presents the ANC as the first point of contact for service delivery to the residents of Johannesburg. We will, along with our government of local unity partners, hold the DA administration accountable and ensure services are adequately delivered to the people of Johannesburg,” he said. He added that, “to this end, the ANC will go back to the drawing board to ensure that a clear and effective opposition strategy is developed”.

Meanwhile, yesterday the ANC’s deputy secretary general, Jessie Duarte, was expected to brief the media on the outcomes of the party’s special national executive committee meeting held over the weekend. The briefing was initially scheduled for Monday and later postponed to Tuesday morning. However, on Tuesday morning the party said the briefing had been postponed and “new details will be communicated in due course”.
