After successfully ousting DA mayor Tania Campbell through a motion of no confidence weeks ago, the ANC was on Tuesday forced to watch her return to office after their attempt to work with the EFF collapsed.
City Press understands that despite the Gauteng provincial executive committee's orders for the party at the regional level to co-govern with the EFF, the Ekurhuleni regional leadership defied the mother body and refused to support the EFF provincial leader, Nkululeko Dunga, as the mayoral candidate on Tuesday afternoon.
City Press understands the ANC had issued instructions to the regional leadership to support the EFF for the mayoral position, but they fielded their own candidate in Jongizizwe Dlabathi.Why the ANC and EFF deadlocked over running of Ekurhuleni metro The EFF burst out in song, accusing the ANC of being sell-outs while the ANC retaliated with songs of their own, pledging their unwavering support to the regional chairperson, Mzwandile Masina.
Masina said they didn't regret tabling the motion of no confidence against her and would do it again if the opportunity availed itself. Campbell said they had a clear plan to reclaim power in Ekurhuleni because they trusted the coalition partners.
