Economic reasons won the day for the return of alcohol sales, which would cushion the knock on the country’s tax revenue collection and boost the agricultural sector as part of the value chain, writes Setumo Stone

The national command council has agreed on the new regulations for the looming level 3 lockdown stage this coming week.

The command council agreed at a meeting on Wednesday to allow the sale of alcohol from bottle stores and liquor outlets. It was argued at the council meeting that liquor contributed to road carnage and violent crime, which would put additional pressure on the healthcare system. But the counterargument was that road carnage would not be much of an issue because the majority of the citizens were still under lockdown.

A government insider confirmed that alcohol would be on sale later this coming week, but said it was unlikely that cigarettes would be sold because of the health issues. However, they agreed that alcohol sales would be permitted off premises from bottle stores and liquor outlets. “We will still proceed with the application, as per our notice of motion. You will recall that one of our wishes was that, even under level 4 and 5, the sale of cigarettes should have been permitted,” he said.
