It was announced this week that “Africa’s Major” will now move back to its traditional December slot – it has been rescheduled to take place from December 3 to 6 at the Gary Player Country Club. The date change was necessitated by The Masters moving from its traditional week in April to the Nedbank Golf Challenge’s week in November.
Selwyn Nathan, the commissioner of the Sunshine Tour, said: “We’re delighted that the Nedbank Golf Challenge has a date for 2020. But, as for the rest of our schedule, we’re waiting to see what happens.“It’s all related to how government will allow golf courses to reopen. Every major country that’s announced the resumption of professional tournaments has opened golf courses. So we’re in close contact with GolfRSA, which is speaking to government about this issue.
While the major dates at the end of the year, including the tournaments co-sanctioned with the European Tour, are important, the Sunshine Tour’s immediate priority will be its “African Swing” of tournaments. The tour currently hosts seven tournaments outside South Africa, so cross-border travel is an obvious challenge.
“Each country has different guidelines. I think everybody’s waiting for the PGA Tour to lead in terms of its testing processes when it resumes. The Korn Ferry Tour sent us players a 37-page guideline on health protocols. If I go over to America to play the Korn Ferry Tour, I need to do so 14 days beforehand to quarantine.
