Eminent voices from around the world have backed UCT’s proposed academic boycott of Israeli universities.

The likes of Nobel prize winner George Smith, SA Jews for a Free Palestine and former ANC MP Andrew Feinstein have written to members of the UCT council, which votes on the boycott on Saturday, reminding them of the parallels between the plight of Palestinians in territories occupied by Israel and blacks in apartheid SA.Smith, from the University of Missouri, said the"boycott, divestment and sanctions" campaign against Israel was based on the worldwide campaign against apartheid.

Quoting the words in the Freedom Charter that say,"the doors of learning and culture shall be opened", Smith said Israel’s military occupation of Gaza and the West Bank"severely curtails Palestinian academic and cultural freedom". Feinstein, who resigned as an MP in 2001 in an arms deal protest, told council members in his letter he is the son of a Holocaust survivor, Erika Hemmer, and proposed the first motion on Holocaust remembrance in the national assembly.

Stupid world voices. I love Israel ❤️

Israel is saintly in comparison to so many other countries in the world. There are countries where it is legal to put gay people to death or to stone women for adultery. Where is the outrage here!? Hypocrites!

Opinions are like ? Everyone has one

Sowellnomics There seems to be cognitive dissonance in academia. What exactly would an academic boycott achieve here? Academic excellence? The opposite will happen.

Not sure that 'Eminent' is the correct word.

So embarrassed by my Alma mater UCT_news. They’ve become just another virtue signalling PC academic international embarrassment with absolutely zero mind of its own. Worsened by the appointment of the undeserving quota fabacademic.

'Eminent voices'...'from around the world' 🙄🙄 You found 3 people who support restricting academic freedom. THREE. 🤡 Chambers needs to do something else with his life. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Why don’t you list the eminent voices?

So, basically, your newspaper's personal role models support opposing academic freedom, just as your newspaper opposes free speech.

And eminent voices from around the world have called UCT's proposal hyocritical.

What a silly idea.

3 people, that’s all.

The opposite is true UCT_news

Three people!

I hope the Dear Lord brings his wrath against this insane move. UCT has been taken over by radical extremists. A once proud place trashed.

TIMES LIVE you are not speaking to the same 'eminent voices' I am talking to.There are very important voices, especially in the USA who are threatening to pull ANY funding to UCT if the Israeli boycott succeeds. Talk to me when you do a follow up article and I will gladly assist.

Your photo still features Rhodes’ statue. Does this mean endorses imperialism 🧐

Fuck the activists and the damage they will do to UCT

OPINIONISTA: Put the squeeze on Apartheid Israel – do not succumb to Zionist pressure like the Vienna MuseumAs a South African anti-apartheid activist, of Jewish descent I look with horror on the forthcoming Israeli elections and their likely impact on Israel, and the wider Middle East, whatever the outcome. He’s always been a bullshitter. Kasrils is an absolute disgrace to the Jewish race. He betrays our history and spits in the faces of all the martyred millions who were murdered merely for being Jewish. “Never again” really means never again but he just doesn’t seem to understand that.

Zionists call for 'urgent help' to head off UCT boycott of Israel'Over the past two years, there has been a concerted campaign at UCT to pressure the university to impose an academic boycott against Israeli universities.' Not only Zionists. Why do you call them Zionists!!! Do you know how much technology and superior knowledge Israel has that could assist with research, science and technology? UCT has been taken over by radical extremists and no longer the great university it was. I stand with Israel God's chosen.

OP-ED: An academic boycott of Israel circumvents the dialogue that people in the region needAcademic boycotts are an onslaught on academic freedom and make it impossible for universities to exist outside of politics. The UCT that I celebrate would never pride itself with severing relations with the very institutions from which a possible solution should emanate.

Thanks IMF and UCT, but your reports are hardly an education'At first glance these two reports could not be more different – the schools report comes from that bastion of global capitalism, the IMF, while the university report is produced by a group of progressive personae, writes Jonathan Jansen.
